Theory to Practice: Incorporating Telemental Health into your Psychotherapy Practice

This presentation will outline the key elements for self-training in the provision of online care. We will discuss the history of telemental health and review the research that demonstrates clinical efficacy. We will discuss generalizing therapeutic frameworks and practice skills from the in-person visit to the on-line visit. We will discuss ethical concerns and review the current practice standards and care guidelines that address confidentiality, HIPPA compliance and risk management. Current licensing barriers and other administrative challenges will be reviewed. A case presentation will demonstrate the use of telemental health in a long-term psychotherapy case.

Presenter Biography

Jennifer Tsappis, LICSW is a clinical social worker in private practice. Jennifer’s extensive experience with adults, children and families struggling with psychiatric concerns at all levels of care informs a flexible, collaborative and pragmatic approach to psychotherapy; grounded in evidence based treatments and core social work values.

In April 2014, Jennifer joined the clinical social work leadership team American Well, On-Line Care Group, LLC. In addition to seeing clients all over the country via an on-line platform, Jennifer has contributed to the clinical development of the telemental health service. Jennifer holds clinical social work licenses in 33 states.
