The NSGP Practice Development Committee Presents

Should They Stay or Should They Go?
Challenging Decisions About Group Membership

What should a group leader do when faced with a member who has overstayed their welcome? Maybe they have outgrown the group or the group has outgrown them? Perhaps there has been a change in mental or cognitive health? Maybe they were never a great fit to begin with? Or perhaps they bring up countertransference that feels nearly intolerable? What can we learn about the group, the member, and ourselves in these situations?

Holding the best interests of the group and the individual in mind, group leaders must navigate these complex and delicate situations.

From a variety of perspectives, our panel will present and discuss the potential advantages and pitfalls arising from these challenging group membership questions.
