Happy 70th Birthday NSGP!
Since its founding in 1956, the Northeastern Society for Group Psychotherapy has maintained a mission to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas about group psychotherapy, encourage sound training, establish ethical standards, and disseminate information to professionals and the public. The theme of BELONGING resonates deeply with this mission, as group psychotherapy fundamentally addresses one of humanity's most essential needs—the need to belong.
Group therapy provides a place where people come together to share, better understand their situations, and learn from and with each other. Through NSGP's commitment to fostering professional community and advancing group practice, we create multiple layers of belonging: belonging within therapeutic groups for healing, belonging within our professional community for growth, and belonging within the broader mental health field for advocacy and innovation.
The 2026 conference theme of BELONGING will explore how group therapists can more intentionally cultivate spaces where members feel genuinely seen, heard, and valued. As we exchange ideas and strengthen our professional bonds, we embody the very belonging we seek to create in our groups—demonstrating that healing happens not in isolation, but in authentic connection with others who share our commitment to transformation and hope.
