A Conversation with Dr. Elliot Zeisel on the Video/Show : GROUP
Dr. Elliot Zeisel, who plays the group leader in the production “GROUP” honors us with his presence at our final virtual Breakfast Club of the 20/21 season. Yes, we are just that excited to make the claim before you today, that Dr. Zeisel’s series will do for group therapy what the Hubble Telescope is doing for space: helping us to see it with greater clarity.
Elliot Zeisel PhD, LCSW, DFAGPA, is a founder and faculty member of the Center for Group Studies. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the American Group Psychotherapy Association, served on it’s board and was Vice Chairman of the Foundation for Advancing Mental Health.
“GROUP” is extraordinary. It is a video that illustrates group therapy as both art and science. With the exception of Dr. Zeisel, all 8 group members are professional actors, who with titillating improvisation, transport Dr. Zeisel smack into the heat of group psychotherapy. The natural and interpersonal style with which Dr. Zeisel works, drawing both the love and ire from his group members, propels GROUP into its own reality as the actors reach deep within to touch true experience and emotion.
We have just learned that on August 12 both seasons of Group will premier on "ALL ARTS", an award winning platform of WNET Group, parent company of New York PBS dedicated to a "quality arts programing". ( See link below )
PROGRAM FORMAT:
Before a look at the video and panel discussion, Dr. Zeisel will describe GROUP’s journey: Where it's flight originated; what is its present location; where does it hope to land.
PANEL:
Breakfast Club Committee members will discuss with Dr. Zeisel segments of his video GROUP using short clips that illustrate particular areas of interest and curiosity (40 minutes) such as: leader’s emotional availability; member contact/communication outside the group, heading off scapegoating at the pass; handling conflict in the group, working with feelings.
DISCUSSION, COMMENTS, AND QUESTIONS WITH THE AUDIENCE:
Dr. Zeisel will take questions and comments (30 minutes).
WE ARE ASKING EVERYONE PLANNING TO ATTEND THIS EVENT TO ACQUAINT THEMSELVES WITH BOTH SEASONS (via YouTube or All Arts). Each episode is short in length but tall on impact!
